1978 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S

The 1978 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S Series 1 marked the beginning of the Countach’s evolution into the icon it would become. Limited to just 50 Series 1 examples, these earliest LP400 S cars combined the purity of the original LP400 with the wider stance and aggressive presence that would define every Countach that followed.

Chassis #1121014 is the car that appeared on the cover of Road & Track magazine in December 1978, introducing the LP400 S to the American market for the first time. Finished in Rosso over Senape leather, it remains one of the most recognizable Countachs of the era. Showing just 17,748 kilometers, this numbers-matching example is among a small number of Series 1 cars equipped with the early LP400-style steering wheel and Stewart Warner gauge cluster, transitional features unique to the earliest production.

Delivered new to noted Countach collector Steve Dypvik, the car was later serviced and specially tuned by Bob Wallace, Lamborghini’s legendary test and development driver. Over the past four years, it has been restored in Italy by former Lamborghini employees and local artisans, preserving the methods and craftsmanship of Sant’Agata during the Countach’s formative years.
