More details
Chassis 86498 began construction at the Ferrari factory on July 17, 1990, before coming off the assembly line on September 11th and completed the following day. Delivered new through Ferrari North America on December 7, 1990, the car was sold via Auto Torino Ltd. of Great Neck, New York, and delivered to its first owner, Jerry J. Moore of Houston, Texas. Accompanying the car today is its original warranty card, documenting delivery through Auto Torino Ltd. and signed by service manager Frank DiAgostino at the time of pre-delivery inspection. The Marcel Massini history report further confirms its early ownership history and traces the car through a remarkably well documented chain of custodianship spanning thirty-five years.
In January 1993, with just 221 miles recorded, the F40 was acquired by prominent Southern California collector and Ferrari dealer Gerald D. Barnes of Anaheim Hills, California. Barnes would remain the car’s caretaker for approximately twenty-three years, making him by far the car’s longest-term owner. Throughout its extended Southern California ownership, the car was maintained through Ferrari & Maserati of Newport Beach, with service records documenting consistent maintenance between 2001 and 2013 as mileage gradually increased from 2,088 to 3,291 miles. The restrained mileage accumulation during this period reflects careful long-term preservation rather than static storage, with the car remaining largely tucked away within one of the most significant Ferrari collections on the West Coast.
By 2016, the car had transitioned from California to the East Coast, later receiving a major engine-out service by Paramount Foreign Cars Italia in Greensboro, North Carolina, in January 2017 at 3,354 miles. A subsequent major service followed in December 2021, including timing belt, tensioner, idler, and fuel system servicing. First certified by Ferrari Classiche in 2007, chassis 86498 retains its Red Book today as part of its extensive documentation file. More recently, the car entered one of America’s most respected private collections, where servicing continued through Ferrari of Newport Beach. In January 2024, at 3,460 miles, the car received four new tires and spark plugs, followed by additional inspections and maintenance through 2025.
Today, chassis 86498 presents in its original Rosso Corsa over Stoffa Vigogna interior combination with just 3,511 miles recorded from new. Accompanying the car are its Ferrari Classiche Red Book, Marcel Massini history report, original warranty card, owner’s manuals, service books, complete factory tool kit, fitted luggage, stock U.S. exhaust, service records, one ignition key, and two door keys.
One of just 213 U.S.-delivery Ferrari F40s produced, chassis 86498 represents a remarkably well preserved and extensively documented example of Ferrari’s definitive supercar. With continuous known ownership history, Ferrari Classiche certification, decades of careful stewardship, and just 3,511 miles from new, it stands today as an important reference-grade F40.
